Islanders survive Dragons, Corbin’s explosive game to get back on win track

Tyrell Corbin went two points away from setting a new single-game scoring record, but his scoring spree wasn’t enough to carry the Vanta Black Dragons, who ran into a solid Kalmado Islanders.

The Islanders countered Corbin’s onslaught with a two-pronged attack anchored on Buboy Barnedo and Marvin Lee, who combined for 74 points, enough to carry Kalmado to a 121-115 triumph on Thursday in The Asian Tournament at City of Passi Iloilo.

So solid were the Islanders that they were able to draw double-double performances from four players, including a record-setting number of assists from JM Ondevilla.

Ondevilla dished out 27 assists, the most in this leg, while also producing 11 markers.

But Ondevilla was just one of the key performers for the Islanders.

Barnedo came away with 40 points to go along with 15 rebounds while Mark Redulfa added 18 points and 11 boards. Mouhamed Faty contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds as these Fabulous Four were more than enough to overcome the hot-shooting night from Corbin.

Even Lee was a solid producer himself, adding 34 markers for the Islanders, who poured in 84 points from inside the paint as against only 48 for the Dragons.
