San Beda gave St. Clare a dose of its own medicine on defense and surprisingly hammered out a convincing 63-42 to rule the under-25 division of the National Developmental Sports League Basketball Series on Thursday at the Metpark Sports Center.
No St. Clare player was able to end up in double figures with big guns Klint Manzano and Lex Gazzingan being held down to just seven points apiece and emerging as their team’s top scorer.
Gazzingan shot horribly from the field, hitting only three of 12 attempts.
That suffocating defense proved to be the biggest weapon for the Red Lions, who held their rivals to just 30.9% shooting from the field.
That defense also allowed San Beda to score 22 of St. Clare’s total 17 turnovers and resulted to 12 steals for the Lions.
MJ Valoces finished with 14 points to pace the Lions, who also drew 13 points from Zairose Mina and 11 markers from Ronrei Tolentino.
