As talks about Family’s Brand Sardines, the owner of Zamboanga’s franchise in the MPBL, joining the PBA circulating, the team remained business as usual with a 92-76 beat down of Pasig on Tuesday night at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
JP Cauilan hit six treys on his way to finishing with 20 points to lead the charge for Zamboanga, which improved its win-loss record to 7-2.
A few days ago, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial revealed to media that they’ve resumed discussions with the family of Anita Kaw, whose family owns Universal Canning, the mother company of Family’s Brand Sardines, Master Sardines and Atami Sardines.
The Kaw family hosted a dinner to the PBA delegation when the league held an out-of-town game in Zamboanga and Tippy Kaw was there to talk to Commissioner Marcial. Universal Canning’s interest in entering Asia’s pioneering professional league cropped up a few years ago it even led to the company’s participation in the league’s inaugural 3×3 event.
But while negotiations are still on going, Zamboanga is keeping its focus in the MPBL where it has a potential of making another deep playoff run.
In other games, Caloocan and host Biñan carved out contrasting victories over their respective rivals.
Caloocan survived Davao Occidental, 79-76, in a nip-and-tuck battle.
Rommel Calahat paced the Batang Kankaloo with 20 markers, including the insurance free throws in the last 23 seconds that virtually sealed the victory for the squad.
Calahat was at his finest in the third period where he poured in 13 points before homegrown Paul Hendrix Casin presided in the fourth period, knocking in 11 of his 19 markers for Batang Kankaloo, who now moved up to 6-3 after dealing the Tigers their second loss in four matches.
Host Biñan had an easier time disposing of Sarangani, 87-73, as Jaymar Gimpayan finished with a double-double performance of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
