Cowboys ready for big time, upset Rum Masters as Rice Vanguards, Giant Lanterns win

ILAGAN, ISABELA – Expansion team Ilagan Isabela scored what could be a breakthrough victory in its young MPBL franchise, pulling off a huge 82-75 win over former league champion Batangas City-Tanduay Rum Masters while Nueva Ecija and Pampanga carved out contrasting victories Saturday at the Capital Arena here.

It was the fifth win in 10 matches for the Cowboys, but that big victory was enough to put this young squad bankrolled by the Diaz family of Ilagan City back in serious playoff hunt.

Second generation cager Arth dela Cruz, undoubtedly the team’s biggest star, came away with 20 points and 10 rebounds in another double-double effort, but his solid performance was complemented by other notable contributors, who helped the Cowboys in atoning their setback at home against General Santos City last week.

Mina, one of the team’s hometown heroes, added 15 markers to go along with six assists.

Joshua Guiab and JR Oligario both came off the bench and produced the much needed support as the two combined for 25 points.

“Ang laking bagay nito, especially nakuha namin ito ng sama-sama,” said Ilagan Isabela coach Louie Gonzalez. “I was able to utilize all my 15 players and everybody did their share.”

Ilagan Isabela’s win nearly overshadowed Nueva Ecija’s continues assault in the league’s 2025 Season as the Rice Vanguards outlasted the Warriors of General City, 83-76, while Pampanga had an easier time disposing of Pasig, 91-55.
