San Beda edges Perpetual Help in playoff-like encounter in NDSL

San Beda squandered a 15-point lead but recovered in time behind big plays from Bill Gravador, Joaquin Wagan and Basti Villanueva, allowing the Red Cubs to escape with a 68-63 win in the under-19 division of the National Developmental Sports League Basketball Series at the Metpark Sports Center on Wednesday.

Gravador provided the intangibles needed by the Red Cubs and served as the catalyst in providing toughness for his squad.

He contributed 10 points on top of seven boards, but he had a putback in one of his team’s important offensive thrusts and a deflection that completed a big stop down the stretch for the Red Cubs.

Wagan, San Beda’s team captain, scored 12 points, including crucial free throws that sealed the win for the Mendiola-based dribblers.

Villanueva, on the other hand, added 11 points, including the go-ahead basket in the last 42 seconds that beat the 24-second shot clock that put San Beda back on the driver’s seat, 64-63.

Juris San Juan led all scorers for San Beda with 22, but during winning time, it was the likes of Gravador, Villanueva and Wagan who stepped up to the plate and carried the Red Cubs home.
